Three consecutive pass crossings demand excellent fitness and prior high-altitude experience.
The Everest Three Pass Trek – 22 Days is widely regarded as the most complete and adventurous trekking experience in Nepal. Designed for experienced trekkers seeking a true Himalayan challenge, this epic journey combines the classic Everest Base Camp Trek with the breathtaking Gokyo Valley and the legendary Three High Passes—Kongma La (5,535 m), Cho La (5,420 m), and Renjo La (5,360 m). Crossing these spectacular mountain passes rewards trekkers with unmatched panoramic views, dramatic alpine landscapes, pristine glacial lakes, and an authentic cultural experience in the heart of the Khumbu region.
Unlike the standard Everest Base Camp trek, the Everest Three Pass Trek takes you far beyond the popular trails, leading into remote valleys, hidden Sherpa settlements, and high mountain wilderness where only a few adventurous trekkers venture. Over the course of 22 unforgettable days, you will walk through dense rhododendron forests, ancient Buddhist villages, rugged glaciers, icy mountain passes, turquoise alpine lakes, and some of the most spectacular scenery on Earth.
The trek offers an extraordinary opportunity to witness the world's highest mountains from multiple viewpoints. Standing at Everest Base Camp, watching sunrise from Kala Patthar, overlooking the emerald Gokyo Lakes from Gokyo Ri, and crossing three challenging Himalayan passes make this journey a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Every day presents a new adventure, pushing both your physical endurance and mental determination while rewarding you with unforgettable memories.
For trekkers who dream of experiencing everything the Everest region has to offer in one expedition, the Everest Three Pass Trek is the ultimate Himalayan adventure.
Why Choose the Everest Three Pass Trek?
The Everest Three Pass Trek is considered the most comprehensive trekking route in the Khumbu region because it combines all of the area's iconic highlights into one incredible itinerary. Rather than following the same trail to Everest Base Camp and returning the same way, this circuit crosses three spectacular mountain passes, creating a diverse and constantly changing journey.
Each pass offers a unique perspective of the Himalayas. Kongma La provides dramatic views over the Khumbu Glacier and surrounding peaks. Cho La connects the Everest Base Camp trail with the beautiful Gokyo Valley through an exciting glacier crossing. Renjo La offers one of the finest panoramic viewpoints in Nepal, overlooking the sparkling Gokyo Lakes with Mount Everest rising majestically in the distance.
The route also includes visits to Everest Base Camp, Kala Patthar, Gokyo Ri, Gokyo Lakes, Namche Bazaar, Tengboche Monastery, and traditional Sherpa villages, making it one of the richest trekking experiences available anywhere in the Himalayas.
A Scenic Flight to Lukla
Your adventure begins with a thrilling mountain flight to Lukla, one of the world's most famous mountain airports. During the short flight, you'll witness breathtaking aerial views of lush hills, deep valleys, winding rivers, and snow-capped Himalayan peaks.
Landing at Lukla marks the true beginning of your Himalayan journey. From here, the trail follows ancient trading routes through beautiful Sherpa villages, crossing suspension bridges draped with colorful prayer flags and entering the spectacular landscapes of Sagarmatha National Park.
Discover the Rich Sherpa Culture
One of the most rewarding aspects of the Everest Three Pass Trek is the opportunity to immerse yourself in the unique culture of the Sherpa people. Renowned worldwide for their mountaineering skills, the Sherpas have lived in the Khumbu region for centuries, preserving their traditions, hospitality, and Buddhist heritage.
As you pass through villages such as Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Dingboche, Lobuche, Gokyo, Thame, and Phortse, you'll encounter beautifully decorated monasteries, ancient mani walls, spinning prayer wheels, and colorful chortens. These sacred landmarks reflect the deep spiritual connection between the Sherpa people and the Himalayan landscape.
A visit to the famous Tengboche Monastery, the largest monastery in the Everest region, offers a peaceful moment to observe Buddhist ceremonies while surrounded by breathtaking mountain scenery.
Trek Through Sagarmatha National Park
The trek passes through the magnificent Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its exceptional biodiversity and dramatic mountain landscapes. Dense forests of pine, fir, juniper, and rhododendron gradually give way to alpine meadows, rocky moraines, glaciers, and high mountain deserts.
Wildlife enthusiasts may spot Himalayan tahr, musk deer, Himalayan monal pheasants, snow pigeons, and even the elusive snow leopard, although sightings are extremely rare. Every section of the trail showcases Nepal's remarkable natural beauty, making the journey as rewarding as the destination itself.
Namche Bazaar – Gateway to Everest
At an altitude of 3,440 meters, Namche Bazaar serves as the bustling heart of the Everest region. This lively Sherpa town is surrounded by towering mountains and provides an ideal location for acclimatization.
Visitors can explore local bakeries, cafes, museums, equipment shops, and traditional markets while enjoying the first clear views of Mount Everest. Nearby viewpoints also offer spectacular panoramas of Everest, Ama Dablam, Thamserku, and Kongde Ri.
The acclimatization day in Namche helps prepare your body for the higher elevations that lie ahead while giving you time to experience the vibrant atmosphere of this famous Himalayan town.
Everest Base Camp – A Legendary Destination
One of the greatest highlights of the trek is reaching Everest Base Camp at 5,364 meters. Standing beneath the towering Khumbu Icefall, surrounded by glaciers and some of the world's highest peaks, is an unforgettable moment for every trekker.
Although Mount Everest itself is partially hidden from Base Camp, the atmosphere is extraordinary. During the spring climbing season, colorful expedition tents fill the glacier as mountaineers prepare for their summit attempts.
Reaching Everest Base Camp represents the fulfillment of a dream shared by trekkers from around the world and is one of the defining moments of the entire journey.
Kala Patthar – The Best View of Everest
The early morning climb to Kala Patthar (5,545 meters) is widely regarded as the finest viewpoint in the Everest region. As the sun rises above the Himalayas, golden light illuminates Mount Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Pumori, and the surrounding peaks.
Unlike Everest Base Camp, Kala Patthar provides an unobstructed panoramic view of the summit of Mount Everest, making it one of the most photographed locations in Nepal. The breathtaking sunrise rewards the challenging climb and creates memories that last a lifetime.
Crossing the Three High Passes
The defining feature of this trek is the successful crossing of three spectacular Himalayan passes.
Kongma La Pass (5,535 m)
Kongma La is the highest of the three passes and offers dramatic views over glaciers, rugged peaks, and remote mountain valleys. The climb is physically demanding but rewards trekkers with incredible scenery and a true sense of wilderness.
Cho La Pass (5,420 m)
Cho La is perhaps the most exciting pass, involving glacier crossings and snow-covered terrain depending on the season. Connecting the Everest Base Camp trail with Gokyo Valley, it provides magnificent views of Ama Dablam, Cholatse, and surrounding peaks.
Renjo La Pass (5,360 m)
Many trekkers consider Renjo La the most beautiful of the three passes. From the summit, the sparkling Gokyo Lakes lie below while Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu dominate the skyline, creating one of the most breathtaking panoramas in the Himalayas.
The Magnificent Gokyo Lakes
After crossing Cho La Pass, the trail reaches the spectacular Gokyo Valley, home to a series of pristine turquoise glacial lakes. These sacred lakes are among the highest freshwater lake systems in the world and are surrounded by towering Himalayan peaks.
The peaceful atmosphere of Gokyo offers a welcome contrast to the busier Everest Base Camp trail. Reflections of snow-covered mountains shimmer across the crystal-clear waters, creating countless opportunities for photography and quiet moments of appreciation.
Climb Gokyo Ri
The ascent of Gokyo Ri (5,357 meters) is another major highlight of the trek. From the summit, trekkers enjoy one of the finest panoramic viewpoints in Nepal, overlooking the Gokyo Lakes, Ngozumpa Glacier—the largest glacier in Nepal—and four of the world's highest mountains: Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu.
Many experienced trekkers consider the view from Gokyo Ri even more impressive than Kala Patthar because of its wider perspective and stunning combination of glaciers, lakes, and mountain peaks.
Incredible Himalayan Views
Throughout the expedition, trekkers are treated to unforgettable views of numerous Himalayan giants, including:
- Mount Everest (8,848.86 m)
- Lhotse (8,516 m)
- Makalu (8,485 m)
- Cho Oyu (8,188 m)
- Ama Dablam
- Nuptse
- Pumori
- Thamserku
- Kangtega
- Cholatse
- Taboche
- Island Peak
- Lobuche East
- Baruntse
- Kongde Ri
Each day offers fresh perspectives of these magnificent mountains as the trail winds through valleys, glaciers, and high mountain passes.
Accommodation and Meals
Accommodation is provided in comfortable mountain teahouses throughout the trek. Rooms are generally twin-sharing with shared bathroom facilities, while dining halls provide warm communal spaces to relax after each day's walk.
Meals include a variety of Nepali and international dishes such as Dal Bhat, noodles, pasta, fried rice, soups, potatoes, eggs, pancakes, Tibetan bread, tea, coffee, and seasonal vegetables. Proper nutrition and hydration are essential for maintaining energy at high altitude.
Best Time for the Everest Three Pass Treka
The best seasons are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). These months offer stable weather, clear mountain views, moderate temperatures, and ideal trekking conditions.
Spring features blooming rhododendron forests and colorful landscapes, while autumn is famous for crystal-clear skies and excellent visibility after the monsoon season.
Winter treks are possible but involve heavy snowfall and colder temperatures. The summer monsoon season is generally avoided due to rainfall, slippery trails, and reduced visibility.
Difficulty and Physical Fitness
The Everest Three Pass Trek is considered one of Nepal's most challenging trekking adventures. Daily walks often last between 6 and 9 hours, with several long, steep ascents and descents over rocky terrain.
Trekkers should have excellent physical fitness, previous high-altitude trekking experience, and strong mental determination. Proper preparation through hiking, endurance training, and cardiovascular exercise greatly improves both comfort and success during the trek.
Safety and Acclimatization
Safety is a top priority throughout the expedition. The itinerary includes carefully planned acclimatization days in Namche Bazaar and Dingboche to help your body adapt gradually to increasing altitude.
Experienced trekking guides monitor your health, pace, and overall well-being throughout the journey. The gradual ascent, proper hydration, balanced nutrition, and adequate rest all contribute to minimizing the risk of altitude sickness while maximizing your chances of successfully completing the trek.

Trip Essentials
Important preparation guidelines, packing checklists, permits, and health safety for this expedition.
Best Season & Weather Conditions
Himalayan weather changes dynamically across altitudes. The two premier windows for this journey are Autumn (September to November) and Spring (March to May). Autumn offers exceptionally crisp atmospheric clarity, dry trails, and the most consistent mountain panoramas. Spring provides longer daylight hours, warmer daytime temperatures, and hillsides adorned with blooming rhododendrons and alpine flora.
Packing List & Gear Checklist
A three-tier layering system is essential to adapt comfortably between warm daytime hiking and freezing mountain nights. Your main gear (up to 10–12 kg) is carried inside a waterproof duffel bag by our porter team, while you carry a light 30–35 L daypack for your camera, water, and warm layers.
- Upper Body: Thermal base layers (Merino wool), lightweight fleece mid-layer, heavy down jacket (-15°C rated), waterproof & windproof outer shell (GORE-TEX).
- Lower Body: Thermal bottoms, quick-dry trekking pants, waterproof over-trousers.
- Footwear: Sturdy, well-broken-in waterproof trekking boots with ankle support, camp sandals, and 4–5 pairs of merino wool hiking socks.
- Accessories: 4-season sleeping bag, UV-blocking sunglasses (Cat 3/4), warm fleece beanie, sun hat, windproof gloves, trekking poles, and a 300+ lumen headlamp with spare batteries.
Permits, Visas & Entry Regulations
All required national park entry permits, TIMS (Trekkers' Information Management System) cards, and local municipality fees are fully organized and handled by the Magical Ascents operations team before your trek begins.
Nepal Tourist Visa: Most nationalities obtain a tourist visa upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport (Kathmandu). Standard visa fees are US $30 (15 days), US $50 (30 days), or US $125 (90 days), payable in cash or major credit cards. Ensure your passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel date and carry 4 passport-size photographs.
Altitude Acclimatization & Physical Fitness
Trekking in the Himalayas requires good cardiovascular endurance and leg stamina rather than technical mountaineering skills. We recommend starting aerobic workouts (jogging, cycling, stair climbing, and loaded day hikes) 4–6 weeks prior to arrival.
Acclimatization Golden Rules: Ascend at a slow, rhythmic pace ("Bistari, Bistari"), drink 3–4 liters of clean water daily, and consume plenty of carbohydrates. Our certified mountain guides conduct daily morning and evening SpO2 (blood oxygen saturation) and pulse checks using medical-grade oximeters to ensure your body is adapting safely.
Teahouses, Meals & Drinking Water
Accommodation during the trek is in authentic mountain teahouses with twin-bed rooms, comfortable foam mattresses, and warm communal dining halls heated by central wood or yak-dung stoves. Dining features fresh, wholesome options including the famous Dal Bhat (lentils, rice, vegetable curry with unlimited complimentary refills), noodle soups, momos, eggs, oats, and pancakes.
Safe Hydration: To protect the delicate Himalayan ecosystem, we actively discourage single-use plastic bottles. We recommend bringing a reusable insulated bottle (Nalgene) and treating tap/boiled water with purification tablets or a Steripen UV purifier. Boiled water is also available for purchase at all teahouses.
Travel Insurance & Emergency Evacuation
Comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory for all guests participating in our Himalayan expeditions. Your policy must specifically cover medical emergencies, trip cancellation, and emergency helicopter rescue/evacuation up to 5,500 meters (18,000 feet).
In the rare event of severe acute mountain sickness (AMS) or sudden illness, our guides initiate immediate descent protocols and our 24/7 Kathmandu operations desk coordinates rapid helicopter evacuation with top certified aviation operators and hospitals in Kathmandu.
